how to tune your website for search engines

As I mentioned above in the EasySite! section, our EasySite! website building templates include search engine tuning to help you and your client's get better listings. This can be a very very valuable service to provide for your clients.

There are no great tricks on this, but we do know what we are doing. We also do not use techniques that get you banned from search engines. As of the posting of this note 4/27/2003, you can see that I do know what I am talking about. Simply go to http://google.com, which is the most popular and largest search engine today, and type in this key word, sell webhosting.

What did you see? Now search engines change from time to time, but as of 4/27/2003 the top 10 results on google.com are all my websites. So yes I know what I am talking about.

So here is how you tune your website for the search engines.

The first thing you need to do is find the key words that apply to your website. Key words are the words that people type in the search engines when they are looking for something. For example, I assumed that people would type in "sell webhosting" if they wanted to find what I had to offer. But how do we know how many people are searching using that key word?? Simple, go to this website:

Type in key words you think people may use to try to find you. This webpage will tell you how many people in march used overture to search for that key word. This gives you a good idea if it is a good key word to try to control.

Ok, the next thing to do is to create a title for your webpage. Every webpage should have a different title and the title should have 1 or 2 of the main key words for that web page. Also the title needs to be an accurate description of that webpage as it will usually be the first part of the description in a search engine listing.

What good is a top search engine listing if the title makes no sense?

The title should be a short one sentence summary of your webpage. After you create it put it into the EasySite! field for the webpage title.

Now you need to create a description. This can be as long as you like but keep in mind usually only a small part of it will show up in the search engine. Be sure it is an accurate description of the page you are adding it to.

It would be a good idea for you to do some searches on the search engine with the key words to see how other people are describing their websites. Yours needs to stand out, be better, be different. Again use some of the main key words for that webpage in the description. After you create it put it into the EasySite! field for the webpage description.

After you have completed filling in the EasySite! search engine tuning fields, you now have the hardest part, creating content on the webpage.

It is important that you use a lot of text on each page as this is what the search engines look at. Also the key words you are trying to get control of on the search engines needs to be used often throughout the web page in normal copy.

There is no point in just repeating the words over and over. Some people will list their key words hundreds of times with nothing in between, and this will not fool the search engines. As a matter of fact it will get you banned from them.

All you need to remember to do is that as you are writing your copy for the website to naturally use the key words as often as possible. You will notice that throughout this website I have listed my key words many times in normal copy.

You should also put the key words in bold using the bold tags, google only picks up key words in bold.

So lets review:
1. Make a one sentence title that is an accurate description and contains one or two of your main key words. Make a different one for each webpage and put it in the EasySite! fields on the search engine tuning section.

3. Use http://inventory.overture.com/d/searchinventory/suggestion/ to find key words that people are actually using that they may use to find you. Make sure the key words are used regularly throughout the webpage and put them in the EasySite! fields on the search engine tuning section.

4. Use the key words throughout the copy on the website, using plenty of text, and put each key word in bold tags.

Quite often I get the question, "Why don't I offer unlimited domains like other resellers or maybe 100 domains for $50 per month." I would like to respond to that with the following reasoning:

I doubt that people/companies offering you unlimited domains for resell pays less than $300.00 per month for a server. Just how many resellers do you think they can put on that server and then allow them each to have unlimited accounts? What if every reseller sold 100 domains and the reseller was being charged $50 per month? The company would have to put 7 or more resellers on that server to make a profit. If they did that the server would have 700 accounts and that server would have constant down time and problems and slow downs.

On top of that if the server had 700 accounts sold on it chances are it would be using up 400 gigs of bandwidth. More than likely the person/company is paying $3 or more per gig for bandwidth, which would be equal to $1,200.00 per month just for bandwidth. So you can see they really could not make money with 7 resellers on that server, unless of course the resellers were not actually getting any clients, or at least very very few clients.

Is any of this making sense to you?

Here is what is happening behind the scenes with persons/companies offering reseller accounts with unlimited domains:

1. They are counting on you only getting a few clients and that you will never actually get 100 clients or more. This way they can put 100 resellers on a server, charge them all $50.00 to $100.00 per month, and make $5,000.00 to $10,000.00 per server.

2. They may have some hidden clause about ridiculous bandwidth charges and you will get a very unpleasant surprise with your monthly bills.

3. They may figure that only 1 out of 10 resellers will actually get a lot of clients and they can make enough profit off the other 9 to pay for that 1.

4. They may figure that when they get a reseller doing very well, they will insist they have to pay more or they will get rid of them for some made up reason such as "spam" or "unapproved use" and just keep the resellers that are inactive or show little action.
